Critical Reflection

“How does my product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?” My product uses or challenges conventions by being a little different than a regular magazines you see done by professionals or sold in stores. The conventions of my magazine are based off of different inspirations from famous magazines and combined together. “How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?” My product engages with audiences by being a worldwide problem many people are dealing with and have been dealing with, but more now because of Covid-19. This can be distributed as real media because of the relation of many people around the world. “How did your production skill develop throughout this project?” I’d say my production skill developed throughout this project by learning how to actually sit and take my time and learn different ways to make it look more like magazines because before it wasn’t too great. I experimented w

The feedback on the photos I took them positively it was a little confusing to me at first, but I understood after time and just substracted a few photos from the mix. The photos I was left with to use still fit with the magazine and probably fits better than what I would've probably used in the first place. After receiving feedback about the photos it didn't necessarily drive me to want to change anything about the layout because when taking the pictures I took into consideration the layout and made them go well with it.

Taking pictures for my topic was difficult I'd say. I had ideas but recreating them to be the perfect fit for my magazine was the harder part. My plan for my pictures was to capture nature and the focus of different things around my yard because in a way to me the single focus defines the mental illnesses. I feel like maybe I accomplished that. The process for taking picture was pretty simple I took pictures of everything and gradually this idea of burning paper with a list of mental illnesses came to mind that was hard because of the wind but I'm happy with the result. The way they came is what I had in mind, I don't think I would need to change much.

I was able to take the feedback positively and eventually submitted a better second sketch than the first. My first sketch I did digitally and sped through it and it was noticeable it was rushed. Since my first sketch I worked on taking my time and doing research on different layouts in order to come up with my final result. Since the feedback I changed the number of text boxes to a lesser amount. Also, on the inside pages I divided the pages in half and had a picture bleed onto the other page and tried to make everything neat and have its own space. I'd say I changed the layout completely, but one thing I kept the same was the idea of the cover page.

I found the critique understandable and I will take everything into consideration and see it through. On my second round of sketches I will change the alignment and positions of everything that needs to be reviewed. I will also be more specific in what I mean and remove some text boxes and adjust whatever else comes to mind when I redo it.

Selecting an idea for this magazine wasn't easy but I believe I selected this idea because it should spark interest. Also, now that we're in a pandemic throughout the pandemic people have been going through so much mentally and it's hard. Online school or going to work not being able to see many people or not being able to do anything leaves you feeling bored and then gradually you start getting to the state of depression or whatever else.  Some similar reference I used to help me influence my layout and design would be a magazine I saw awhile ago. I don't remember too much about it but my layout is somewhat similar to it. The layout stuck out to me because it seemed very clean and attractive to the eye. So, I wanted to maybe convey that. I really enjoy the off-center type of cover and then not too much, but not too little, pictures.
